The University of Delaware men’s basketball team earned their first victory of the season on Thursday with an 81-77 victory over the Robert Morris University Colonials.
Senior guard Niels Lane led the team in scoring in the win with 19 points.
Three other Hens players who scored in double-digits were senior guard Erik Timko (12), junior guard Cavan Reilly (10), and sophomore guard Trent Middleton Jr. (13).
Delaware had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (36-32), fast-break points (22-6), blocks (4-3), and rebounds (39-36).
UD also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 47.2
(25-53) and Robert Morris shooting 39.1%(27-69). The Blue Hens also bested the Colonials from the free-throw line, with the team shooting 81.3 (26-32) and Robert Morris shooting 63.6(14-22).
Game Recap:
The Blue Hens lead by two points at the end of the first half.
In the early minutes of the opening half, UD would trail 11-6 but scored five straight points to tie the game at 11 with 15:38 remaining in the first period. Senior forward John Camden would cap off the run by nailing a three-point shot.
Robert Morris would answer right back by outscoring the Hens 17-7 to give them a 28-18 advantage with 9:37 left in the opening half. DJ Smith and Amarion Dickerson found the basket with ease during this time, scoring ten of the team’s 17 points.
The Blue Hens punched right back by scoring 14 straight points to take a 32-28 lead with 6:51 remaining in the first half. Freshman Izaiah Pasha, Erik Timko, and Cavan Reilly made trouble for the Colonials’ defense, scoring 12 of the team’s 14 points.
Delaware would add 13 more points to their total to end the first half with a 45-43 advantage.
UD takes home an 81-77 win!
Robert Morris would open the second half with a burst of energy, as the team dashed off to an 8-1 run to take a 51-46 edge with 16:47 left in the game.
The Blue Hens would punch right back by going on an 8-2 run to grab a 54-53 lead with 12:56 left in the second half. Trent Middleton Jr. had the hot hand during this time, scoring four of the team’s eight points.
Fast forward to the 8:24 minute mark in the second half, where Alvaro Folgueiras drained a three-pointer to give his team a one-point edge (65-64).
In the next three minutes and 78 seconds, the game intensified as the lead changed hands four times and it was tied three. Cavan Reilly would give the Hens a two-point lead (74-72) at the end of this.
Fast forward to the 2:49 minute mark, where the Colonials’ Josh Omojafo hit a layup to slice the deficit to one point (76-75).
The Hens would hit five free throw shots to stave off Robert Morris and secure an 81-77 victory.
