The Delaware State University women’s basketball team opened the 2024 season with a 71-44 victory over the Divison II Georgian Court University Lions on Monday.
Sophomore guard Mahogany Cottingham and junior guard Kyra Lawrence were the scoring leaders in the win for the Hornets with 16 points.
Freshman forward Ericka Huggins recorded a double-double in the win with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Sophomore forward McKenzie Stewart was locked on the boards all night, as she collected 12 rebounds.
Delaware State had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (8-0), fast-break points (18-2), turnovers (19-23), blocks (4-3), steals (13-4), and rebounds (47-23).
The Hornets also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 48.8 % (25-58) and Georgian Court shooting 29.2%(14-48). Delaware State also bested the Lions from the three-point line, with the team shooting 35.7%(5-14) and Georgian Court shooting 21.4%(3-14).
