Delaware trails by four points at the end of the first quarter.
The first points of the game came from UD’s first drive of the opening quarter when they went 57 yards in seven plays to end with kicker Nate Reed hitting a 23-yard field goal to put his team up 3-0 with 11:50 remaining in the first quarter.
Monmouth would answer right back with a touchdown drive as the team marched 75 yards in 15 plays to end with quarterback Derek Robertson finding his wideout Tra Neal for the seven-yard touchdown reception to give their team a 7-3 edge at the end of the opening quarter.
The two teams tied at 14 at the end of the first half.
Delaware would continue to struggle to find the endzone but added three points in the early minutes of the second quarter. The scoring drive went 55 yards in seven plays to end, with Nate Reed making his second field goal (24-yarder) of the day to cut the deficit to 7-6 with 12:45 left in the first half.
After the Hawks went out after three plays, the Blue Hens would finally find the endzone for the first time in the game on their offensive drive.
UD’s next drive would drain six minutes and 47 seconds off the clock, as the team went 71 yards in 14 plays to end with running back Marcus Yarns busting in the endzone for a one-yard score to give his team a 14-7 lead with 5:05 left in the second quarter. Yarns would also convert the two-point try for the Hens.
Monmouth wouldn’t take long to tie this game up at 14, as on the first play of their drive, quarterback Derek Robertson hit his wide receiver TJ Speight for an 87-yard touchdown catch.
The Hens lead by seven points at the end of the third quarter.
Delaware would open the second half with a bang as the team traveled 69 yards in 15 plays to end quarterback Zach Marker running five yards for the score to give his team a 21-14 advantage with 8:18 remaining in the third quarter.
The Hawks would punch right back with another one-play score, as quarterback Derek Robertson would hit wide receiver Gavin Nelson for a 72-yard touchdown catch to tie the game at 21 with 8:02 left in the third.
UD’s offense bounced right back to give their team the lead once again, as they drove 63 yards in nine plays to end with quarterback Zach Marker
connecting with his wideout Phil Lutz for a two-yard touchdown reception to give their team a 28-21 advantage with 4:31 remaining in the third quarter.
Other than the touchdown, a highlight on the drive came on second and ten on their own 47-yard line, where running back Jo’Nathan Silver dashed 45 yards to Monmouth’s eight-yard line.
The Blue Hens take home a 42-35 victory!
Monmouth would open the fourth quarter with an 11-play, 54-yard scoring drive which ended with Derek Robertson hitting receiver Gavin Nelson for their second touchdown connection of the day to slice the deficit to one point (28-27) with 13:57 remaining in the game.
Delaware would continue to find the endzone, as the team cruised 81 yards in seven plays to end, with Zack Marker finding his wideout Phil Lutz for their second touchdown connection of the day to push their team’s edge to 35-27 with 10:48 left in the fourth.
The Hens’ next score would happen on their second play, as Marker would hit his running back Marcus Yarns on a short pass, which Yarns took for 86 yards to extend UD’s lead to 42-27 with 6:10 remaining in the game.
Monmouth would make this game interesting when running back Sone Ntoh rushed one yard for a touchdown on a 60-yard, eight-play drive to cut the score to 42-35 with 3:20 left in the fourth.
Delaware would hang to win 42-35 and remain undefeated (5-0) in the season.
