Ryan O’Connor throws for 4 touchdowns in Blue Hens season-opening 48-17 win over Bryant

Bryant would get the ball first in the game but went a quick three and out.

UD didn’t fair any better in their first possession of the ball by only gaining two yards in three plays.

The first scoring drive of the game would come from the Bulldogs at the 12:30-minute mark in the opening quarter, where they would go 58 yards in 11 plays to end with Bryce Soli nailing a 23-yard field goal to give his team a 3-0 lead with seven minutes left in the first.

Delaware’s offense would punch right back by driving 78 yards in nine plays to end with quarterback Ryan O’Connor finding wide receiver Phil Lutz for the 16-yard touchdown reception to give their team a 7-3 edge with 3:19 remaining in the opening quarter.

O’Connor completed six of his seven passes for 65 yards on the touchdown drive.

So would the Bulldogs respond with a score of their own on their next drive? No, they would move the ball one yard before Bryant’s quarterback Jarrett Guest‘s pass would be intercepted by the Hens defensive back KT Seay, who returned it for 38 yards to the Bulldogs yard line with 2:15 left in the first.

The Blue Hens offense did not waste the short-yardage that their defense gave them, as running back Marcus Yarns rammed the ball in for a one-yard touchdown to push his team’s advantage to 14-3 with 2:12 remaining in the opening quarter.

Blue Hens lead by 24 points at the end of the first half.

Delaware would get the first scoring drive of the second quarter, as the team marched 56 yards in six plays to end with quarterback Ryan O’Connor finding his running back Marcus Yarns for the three-yard touchdown catch to extend the team’s lead to 21-3 with 13:30 remaining in the first half.

Not only did he catch the touchdown on this drive, but Yarns powered the offense by rushing for 38 yards.

A pass interference call also helped UD move the ball during this stretch, as third and ten on the BRY’s 23-yard line went to first and ten on the opponent’s yard line.

The Bulldogs’ first touchdown drive of the game would start at the 13:30 minute mark at their own 25-yard line. Bryant would cruise 75 yards in six plays to end with their quarter Jarrett Guest finding his tight end Marc Taglieri Jr. for the four-yard touchdown reception to slice the score to 21-10 with 11:17 left in the second quarter.

UD’s offense answered back with a 72-yard, 14-play touchdown drive that saw running back Jo’Nathan Silver rushing for 57 yards. Silver ended the possession with a one-yard touchdown scamper to extend his team’s advantage to 27-10 with 5:12 left in the first half. Kicker Nate Reed would miss the extra point on the drive.

After the Bulldogs only gained one yard in six plays, it would be the Hens’ turn again to get a score in the endzone.

They would do just that, as Delaware’s offense would fly 35 yards in six plays to end with Ryan O’Connor finding his wide receiver Nicholas Laboy for an 11-yard touchdown catch to expand the team’s edge to 34-10 at the end of the first half.

O’Connor completed four of his five passes for 41 yards on the scoring drive.

UD leads by 31 at the end of the third quarter.

The only scoring drive in the third quarter would come from the Blue Hens at the 12:30-minute mark. Delaware would march 95 yards in 12 plays to end with Ryan O’Connor finding his wide receiver Jalyn Witcher for the eight-yard touchdown reception to push their team’s lead to 41-10.

Other than the touchdown pass, another highlight of the drive came on third and eight on their own 42-yard line where O’Connor hit wide receiver Max Patterson for a 38-yard reception.

Delaware takes home a 48-17 victory!

The Bulldogs would continue to have no answers for the Blue Hens offense, as the team would start the fourth quarter with 74 yards, seven-play scoring drive that ended with running back Saeed St. Fleur galloping for a 25-yard touchdown to push the team’s lead to 48-10 with 12:42 remaining in the game.

Three series later, Bryant would drive 77 yards in three plays to end with running back Markiel Cockrell rushing for seven yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to 48-17 with 1:53 left in the game.

Quarterback Brennan Myer had two highlights on this possession with a 40-yard completion to wide receiver Keegan Wilburn and a 35-yard catch from Marc Taglieri Jr.
