NCAA D2 East Region 1 Champions!: Delani Sheehan shuts down Assumption hitters in Wilmington University’s 8-0 win

The Wilmington University softball is advancing to the NCAA Division II Softball East Super Regional after the team beat the Assumption University Greyhounds 8-0 on Sunday in the East Regional 1 Final on Sunday. The Wildcats’ next matchup will be versus Adelphi starting on Tuesday at 11 am ET.

Game Recap:

Wilmington University leads by two runs after the third inning.

The Wildcats would strike first in this Regional Final as junior outfielder Tristyn Stewart would push a run home when she grounded out to give her team a 1-0 edge in the top of the opening inning.

Two innings later, WilmU would add another run to their lead when senior right fielder Sara Miller pushed in a run with a Sac fly to push the score to 2-0.

The Wildcats lead by seven runs at the end of the fifth inning.

Wilmington would continue to widen their lead in the fourth inning, as the team scored two runs on four hits to take their advantage to 4-0.

Senior first baseman Julia Thuer started the scoring in the inning as she smacked an RBI single to right field to put the score at 3-0.

Three batters later, Tristyn Stewart came up to plate with the bases loaded and would bring a run home when she was issued a walk to take the score 4-0.

The Wildcats would continue their scoring blitz in the fifth inning, as Thuer would record her second RBI of the day by hitting a single to left center, and then junior outfielder Taylor Gillis followed that score up by pushing a run home with a Sac Fly and lastly senior outfielder Isabella Eleazar would get home on a fielding error by the Greyhounds shortstop to give their team a 7-0 advantage.

Wilmington University takes home an 8-0 win!

Senior infielder Haley Downin  would knock in the last run for WilmU in the top of the sixth inning when she had an RBI single to give her team an 8-0 lead.

 Redshirt sophomore starting pitcher Delani Sheehan shut down the Assumption hitters on Sunday, as she went six innings, gave up one hit, one walk, struck out four batters, and earned the win.
