Wilmington University baseball sweeps Bridgeport

The Wilmington University baseball team picked up two wins on Wednesday as the team swept the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights 7-4 (Game One) and 19-0 (Game Two).

Game Recap:

Wilmington University trails by two runs at the end of the first inning.

The Wildcats would strike first in this game, as freshman first baseman 

Chase Fleming and freshman infielder Xavier Cortez each recorded an RBI single in the top of the opening inning to give their team a 2-0 edge.

Bridgeport would answer back in the bottom of the inning when the team scored four runs on five hits to take a 4-2 lead.

The highlight score of the first inning for the Purple Knights was when Jeremy Rodrigues hit a two-run triple to left center.

The Wildcats would trail by one run at the end of the fourth inning.

Wilmington would cut into Bridgeport’s lead a little more in the top of the fourth when sophomore infielder Tyler Pirrung would get a runner home on a fielder’s choice to slice the score to 4-3.

WilmU takes a one-run lead at the end of the sixth inning.

The Wildcats would grab the lead in the top of the sixth inning when the team scored two runs on three hits to take a 5-4 advantage.

Tyler Pirrung would push in his second runner of the game when he smoked an RBI triple to right center to tie the score at four.

Senior catcher Jack McDonald stepped up to the plate next as he hit an RBI single to right field to give his team a 5-4 edge.

Wilmington University takes home a 7-4 victory!

WilmU would add two last runs in the top of the seventh inning when Junior outfielder Sean Glatts, and freshman outfielder Brandon Grygo each recorded a RBI single to give their team a 7-4 lead.

Pitching Recap:

Senior starting pitcher Matt Warrington went five innings, gave up six hits, four earned runs, four runs, struck out nine batters, and earned the win.

The bullpen consisted of two relievers, who combined to give up two hits, and struck out two batters.

Junior pitcher Alex Krick closed out the game, as he went one inning, gave up one hit, and earned the save.
