MEAC Tourney Semifinals: Deywilk Tavarez scores 20 points in Delaware State’s 71-58 victory over NC Central

Delaware State leads by one at the end of the first half.

The two teams were ready to battle in this matchup, as in the first seven minutes and 48 seconds, the lead bounced around like a ping-pong ball on a table. The highest lead during this time was three points, and then NC Central would get a little cushion seconds later by taking a five-point edge (15-10) with 12:05 left in the opening half.

Fast forward to the 6:58 minute mark, where DSU’s sophomore guard Jevin Muniz hit a jump shot to give his team a 23-18 advantage.

Despite getting outscored 8-4 for the rest of the first half, the Hornets would hold a 27-26 lead at halftime.

DSU takes home a 71-58 victory!!

Delaware State came out ready to strike in the early minutes of the second half, as the team went on a 13-4 run to take a 40-30 advantage with 14:41 left in the game. 

Freshman guard Deywilk Tavarez and senior forward Alston Andrews were a hard duo to stop during this time, as they scored nine of the team’s 13 points.

The Eagles would come fighting back, as the team would narrow the lead to three points (50-47) at the 6:46 minute mark when Keishon Porter hit a layup.

DSU would not lose their lead, as they would dash out to score 12 straight points to expand their edge to 62-47 with 3:57 remaining in the game. Tavarez served up the highlights during this stretch, as he scored eight of the team’s 12 points.

Fast forward to the 1:34 minute mark, where Andrews would get a layup to go in to push the Hornets lead to 17 points (66-49).

Delaware State would score five more points in the first half to seal an upset 71-56 victory over NC Central.
