Wilmington University Baseball earns 8th victory of the season with 11-3 win over Shippensburg

The Wilmington University baseball team moved their record to 8-5 on Tuesday with a dominating 11-3 win over the Shippensburg University Raiders.

Game Recap:

Wilmington University leads by two runs at the end of the first inning.

The scoring came fast in this game, as the two teams scored a combined eight runs in the first inning.

Shippensburg would get on the board first, as they scored three runs on four hits and two errors to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

Brady Harbach knocked the first two runs of the game in with a double down the left-field line to put the score at 2-0.

Two batters later, Morgan Wyatt would hit a RBI single down the third base line to push the Raiders edge to 3-0.

WilmU would answer back in the bottom of the first inning, where the team scored five runs on three hits to take a 5-3 advantage.

After two singles, a wild pitch that advanced each run, a batter that was hit by a pitch, and a strikeout, it would be freshman outfielder D’Angelo Ponce‘s turn at the plate with the bases loaded. Ponce would make the most of his turn in the batter’s box as he would walk in a run to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Two batters later, senior shortstop Matt Warrington would also earn an RBI with a walk to slice the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the first inning.

Freshman Garrett Quinn would be up next, as he would hit a two-out, two-run single to center field to give his team a 4-3 lead in the first.

On the very next play, Warrington would score by stealing home to push Wilmington’s edge to 5-3.

WilmU adds another run in the fifth inning.

The Wildcats would add another run to their total in the bottom of the fifth inning when D’Angelo Ponce knocked in his second run of the day with a RBI single up the middle to give his team a 6-3 advantage.

The Wildcats scored three more runs in the sixth inning.

Wilmington would keep pouring on the runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, as they scored three runs on two hits to take a 9-3 lead.

Freshman outfielder Brandon Grygo would get the scoring started in the inning as he slapped a two-run double to right center to give his team an 8-3 edge.

Junior outfielder Cam Trego would also push a run in when he had a sacrifice fly to extend the Cats’ advantage to 9-3.

Wilmington University takes home an 11-3 win!

The Wildcats would add two more runs to their lead in the bottom of the eighth inning when Freshman first baseman Chase Fleming hit a two-out, two-run single to right field to expand the team’s advantage to 11-3.

Pitching Recap:

Despite the rocky first inning, Sophomore starting pitcher Steve Schenning rebounded after that by posting five innings and gave up six hits, three runs, one walk, and five strikeouts.

Senior pitcher Anthony Giordano would relieve Schenning, as he went three innings, gave up two hits, and struck out two batters.

Senior pitcher Dom Grady would close out the game by pitching one inning and giving up one hit and one walk.
