The Wilmington University baseball team swept the University of New Haven Chargers on Saturday with a 5-4 walk-off win in Game One, and a 5-1 victory in the second match.
Let’s start with the 4-0 win!
Game One Recap:
Wilmington University pushes two runs in the fourth to grab the lead.
The game started with the two starting pitchers owning the opposing lineup, as neither one of them allowed a hit through three innings.
WilmU would break up the pitcher’s duel by scoring two runs on one hit in the bottom of the fourth inning.
After the inning started with three walks and a sac bunt, freshman Xavier Cortez came up to the plate and hit a two-RBI single to center field to give his team a 2-0 lead.
WilmU would lead by three runs at the end of the third inning.
New Haven would respond in the top of the fifth inning when Cole Maucere hit an RBI single to right field to cut the score to 2-1.
The Wildcats would add to their lead in the bottom of the fifth, as they scored two runs on two hits to take a 4-1 edge.
Junior outfielder Sean Glatts would start the inning off with a bang as he hit a solo home run to left field to give his team a 3-1 advantage.
Three batters later, senior catcher Jack McDonald came up to bat and slapped an RBI single to right field to extend the Cats’ lead to 4-1.
Wilmington takes home a 5-4 walk-off win!
The Chargers would strike back in the top of the sixth when Kenneth Franquiz blasted a three-run homer to center field to tie the game at four.
Fast forward to the bottom of the ninth inning, where senior second baseman Erik Grady would hit a walk-off single to center field to give WilmU a 5-4 victory.
Pitching recap:
Senior starting pitcher Matt Warrington would post solid stats in the win, as he went five innings, and gave up four hits, one run, one earned run, three walks, and four strikeouts.
The four pitchers went after Warrington combined for two hits, three runs, three earned runs, three walks, four strikeouts, and one home run.
