The Route One Rivalry trophy is heading to Dover, as the Delaware State University women’s basketball team defeated their in-state rival, the University of Delaware Blue Hens, 69-66. Thursday’s win marks the second time the Hornets have beaten the Blue Hens in their 15 meetings.
Junior forward Tyshonne Tollie led the team in scoring in the win with 22 points.
Two other DSU players who scored in double-digits were sophomore guard/forward Savannah Brooks (17), and graduate student guard Denijsha Wilson (16).
Sophomore guard/forward Naomi Zulueta was locked on the boards all game as she collected 16 rebounds.
Delaware State had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (34-24), points off of turnovers (22-8), second-chance points (7-2), fast-break points (13-11), turnovers (14-24), blocks (3-1), and steals (7-1).
The Hornets also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 39.3 % (24-61) and the University of Delaware shooting 38.5 %(25-65). Delaware State also bested the Blue Hens from the three-point line, with the team shooting 41.7 % (5-12) and UD shooting 33.3 %(11-33). The Hornets were also the better team at the free-throw line in this game, as the team shot 61.5 %(16-26), and the Hens shot 55.6 %(5-9).
