Brittingham, Washington & Dunston-Mason combine for 44 points as Wilmington University’s earns first win of the season over Cheyney

Wilmington University would trail by two points after one quarter.

The game started with Cheyney dashing out to a 6-0 lead with 6:20 left in the opening period. 

Seconds later, WilmU would respond by outscoring the Wolves 12-9 for the rest of the first to slice the lead to two points (15-12). Amber Washington and Trinity Brittingham would command the offense during that stretch, as they scored six of the team’s 12 points.

WilmU would end the first half trailing by two points. 

The Wildcats came out ready to strike in the early minutes of the second quarter, as the team went on a 6-1 run to grab an 18-16 advantage with 5:30 remaining in the first half. Junior forward  Aniyah Bond was a factor on both sides of the ball, as she had two points and pulled down two defensive rebounds.

Wilmington’s defense stepped up during that time, as the unit had five defensive rebounds and three steals.

For the rest of the second quarter, the Wolves would outscore WilmU 13-9 to take a slim one-point lead (28-27) heading into halftime.

The Wildcats hold a 12-point lead at the end of the third quarter. 

Cheyney could not slow down Wilmington in the third period, as the team outscored the Wolves 24-10 to take a 51-39 edge heading into the fourth.

Amber Washington and Cha’Nyah Dunston-Mason were a tough duo for Cheyney to stop in the quarter, as the two scored 17 of the Cats’ 24 points.

WilmU winning the turnover battle, also played a part in the big point swing as Wilmington had six, and the Wolves accounted for 11.

Wilmington takes home a 66-60 win!!

Fast forward to the 1:09 minute mark in the fourth quarter, where Cheyney’s Cianna Roberts would hit a jump shot to cut the score to eight points (62-54).

Wilmington would hold on to win 66-54, as Trinity Brittingham made back-to-back layups to seal the victory for her team.
