Goldey-Beacom would hold an eight-point lead at the end of the first half.
The game started with the two teams just trading buckets back and forth, as there were 11 lead changes, and the match was tied five times in the first 12 minutes and 45 seconds of the first half. The last bucket during that stretch came from Mercy’s Taj Chiles, who hit a pair of free-throws to give his team a 22-21 advantage with 7:55 left in the opening period.
Starting at the 6:47 minute mark, the Lightning would outscore the Mavericks 20-11 to end the first half with a 41-33 edge. Ayshion Centeno, Nazim Derry, and Damani Thomas were unstoppable on this run, as the trio scored 18 of the team’s 21 points.
Goldey-Beacom’s defense also stepped up during this stretch, as they had six defensive rebounds and four steals.
The Lightning take home an 88-66 victory!
Fast forward to the 14:08 minute mark in the second half, where Caleb Bates would hit a layup to push Goldey’s lead to 52-41.
Almost a minute later, Mercy would fight back by going on an 8-2 run to slice the deficit to five points ( 54-49) with 10:35 left in the game.
Seconds later, the Lightning would answer back by outscoring the Mavericks 34-17 for the rest of the second half to seal an 88-66 victory. Nazim Derry and Bates were the leaders of this run, as the two scored 19 of the team’s 34 points.
