Alyssa Ruggeri scores twice in Wilmington University’s 3-1 win over Mercy

The Wilmington University women’s soccer team earned their eighth win of the season on Thursday with a 3-1 win over the Mercy University Mavericks.

The standouts in the game for the Wildcats were redshirt sophomore midfielder Manuela Restrepo, redshirt freshman forward Evelyn Payne, junior forward Alyssa Ruggeri, freshman forward Sharon Freire Omonigho, sophomore defender Gabbi Corchiani, and and junior goalkeeper Mio Nakajima.

Restrepo had one assist in the win.

Payne had one shot, one shot at the goal, and scored one goal in the victory.

Ruggeri had six shots, three shots at the goal, and scored two goals in the game.

Freire Omonigho had one assist in the win.

Corchiani had one assist in the victory.

Nakajima allowed zero goals in 90 minutes and had four saves in the game.

Wilmington would end the first half, leading by one goal.

The scoring in this game would not start till the 34th-minute mark, where Alyssa Ruggeri would score the match’s first goal off a corner from her teammate, Gabbi Corchiani, to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at the end of the first half.

Neither team would get off many shots in the first half, as both of them had three.

WilmU scores two more goals in the second half to seal a 3-1 victory!

There would not be a long wait for scoring in the second half, as at the 49th-minute mark, Manuela Restrepo would get the ball into the box on the right side, which then her teammate Evelyn Payne dashed down to secure it and push the ball in low past the goalkeeper to extend Wilmington’s edge to 2-0.

Thirteen minutes later, Mercy would finally get on the board when Ancksu Dixon found the back of the net to cut the score to 2-1.

Five minutes later, Alyssa Ruggeri would head in her second goal of the day to seal a 3-1 victory for the Wildcats over the Mavericks. Sharon Freire Omonigho would assist in Ruggeri’s scoring play.
