Wilmington University pushes winning streak to four with 5-0 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas

The Wilmington University women’s soccer team earned their sixth win of the season on Wednesday with a 5-0 victory over the St. Thomas Aquinas College Knights.

The standouts in the game for the Wildcats were redshirt sophomore midfielder, Manuela Restrepo, senior midfielder Sammie Bennett,  redshirt freshman forward Evelyn Payne, junior midfielder Julia Yuhase, freshman forward Amelia Aquino, junior defender Brianna Wons , freshman forward Sharon Freire Omonigho, and junior goalkeeper Mio Nakajima.

Restrepo had four shots, one shot at the goal, and had three assists in the win.

Bennett had one shot, one shot at the goal, and had one assist in the game.

Payne had four shots, two shots at the goal, and scored one goal in the victory.

Yuhase had one shot, one shot at the goal, and scored one goal in the game.

Aquino had one shot, one shot at the goal, and scored one goal in the win.

Wons had two shots, one shot at the goal, and scored one goal in the victory.

Freire Omonigho had two shots, two shots at the goal, and scored one goal in the win.

Nakajima allowed zero goals in 90 minutes and had four saves in the game.

Wilmington would score four goals in the first half of the game.

The Wildcats did not waste any time to score in this matchup, as Manuela Restrepo would find her teammate Sharon Freire Omonigho near the middle, and Omonigho would get the ball past the Knights goalkeeper to give her team a 1-0 lead at the five-minute mark.

A couple of minutes later, Julia Yuhase got the ball from Restrepo from the middle and dashed all the way down to the 18-yard box, where she knocked in the ball in the net to extend WilmU’s edge to 2-0.

Almost eight minutes later, Evelyn Payne joined the scoring party as she found the back of the net to expand the Wildcats’ advantage to 3-0. Manuela Restrepo would have her third assist of the day on Payne’s scoring play.

The Cats weren’t done adding to the scoreboard just yet, as Amelia Aquino would rebound Sammie Bennett’s missed shot and then would knock in a goal to push the lead to 4-0 at the end of the first half.

Wilmington outshot St. Thomas Aquinas 11-1 in the first half of this game.

The Wildcats would score one more goal in the second half to seal a 5-0 win!

Brianna Wons would score the last goal of the game at the 80th-minute mark when she blasted a kick from 40 yards out, which the ball then bounced around in the box and slipped in the goal to seal Wilmington’s 5-0 victory.
