O’Connor throws 4 touchdowns in Blue Hens 43-17 win over Duquesne

The Blue Hens would lead by eight points at the end of the first quarter.

Delaware would start this game with a quick three-and-out series, but Duquesne had better luck on their first drive of the first quarter as the team was able to find the endzone.

The Dukes would march 52 yards in three plays to end with their quarterback Darius Perrantes finding his wide receiver Darryl Powell Jr. for a 52-yard touchdown reception to give their team a 7-0 lead with 12:33 left in the first quarter.

UD would answer back on their next drive, which would start on their own 48-yard line. The Blue Hens would drive 57 yards in eight plays to end with running back Marcus Yarns rushing up the middle for a one-yard touchdown to give his team an 8-7 edge with 9:34 remaining in the first half. Yarns also had a successful two-point conversion run during the series.

Other than the touchdown, one of the highlights on the drive was on second and ten on Duquesne’s 23-yard line, when University of Delaware’s quarterback Ryan O’Connor hit his wideout JoJo Bermudez for a short pass, which Bermudez took for 20 yards.

The momentum of the game swung to the Blue Hens’ side as on the Dukes’ eighth play on their next series, their quarterback Darius Perrantes would be intercepted by UD’s Ty Davis, who took it to his team’s 40-yard line.

Delaware would not waste that turnover as the team would drive 60 yards in seven plays to end with quarterback Ryan O’Connor finding wideout JoJo Bermudez for the 12-yard touchdown catch to push their team’s advantage to 15-7 to finish the first quarter.

Delaware leads by five points at the end of the first half.

Near the end of the opening quarter, Duquesne would start on their first scoring drive since the early minutes of the game, and the team would cruise 63 yards in nine plays to end with their kicker Brian Bruzdewicz booting a 25-yard field goal to cut the score to 15-10 with 12:46 remaining in the second period.

Two drives later, the Dukes would light up the scoreboard once again, as the team diced the UD defense up by driving 80 yards in three plays to end with their running back Edward Robinson rushing 68 yards for a touchdown to give his team a 17-15 edge with 7:08 left in the first half.

Fast forward to the 2:28 minute mark in the second quarter, where the Blue Hens would stop the momentum Duquesne was building with a score of their own. The University of Delaware was set up in a nice starting spot for their series, which was at the Dukes’s 24-yard line.

UD did not waste the short field, as the team went 24 yards in four plays to end, with running back Marcus Yarns rushing up the middle for a one-yard scamper to grab a 22-17 lead with 41 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

UD ends the third quarter with a 12-point lead.

The second half would start with Duquesne’s quarterback Darius Perrantes getting intercepted by Blue Hens Nic Ware on the seventh play of their opening drive, Ware would take the ball to his team’s 27-yard line.

Delaware would not waste the gift that their defense gave them as they would go 73 yards in two plays to end with quarterback Ryan O’Connor hitting wideout Chandler Harvin for a short pass, which Harvin would take for 57 yards for the score to increase their lead to 29-17 with 10:23 left in the third quarter.

Blue Hens take home a dominating 43-17 win over Duquesne!

It was a good day for the University of Delaware’s secondary as they would get their third interception of the day when Steven Rose, Jr. got the ball in his hands at the beginning of the fourth quarter from Duquesne’s quarterback Darius Perrantes.

The Blue Hens would again, for the third time in the game, turn the Dukes’ turnover into points, as the team went 63 yards in ten plays to end with quarterback Ryan O’Connor finding wide receiver Joshua Youngblood for the seven-yard touchdown catch to push the score to 36-17 with 9:40 left in the game.

Two drives later, UD’s last scoring drive of the game would start at their own 18-yard line. Despite being backed up in their own territory, the Hens would cruise 82 yards in eight plays to end with Ryan O’Connor finding wide receiver wideout Phil Lutz for the 34 yard touchdown reception to seal a 43-17 win over the Dukes.

The Blue Hens’ defense suffocated the Duquesne’s offense all second half, as they only allowed 73 yards in the team’s six drives during that time.
