The first quarter went the Wildcats’ way with a tune of a 12-0 lead.
New Hampshire’s fortune was very good in the opening quarter of this rainy contest, as the team would start the game by blocking Blue Hens Ryan Kost’s punt at the 24-yard line, which then saw the ball fly in the back of the endzone for a safety to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead with 11:37 left in the first.
After the safety, the Wildcats started their drive on offense at Delaware’s 48-yard line with 11:30 left in the opening quarter. UNH would march 42 yards in six plays to end with their kicker Nick Mazzie hitting a 23-yard field goal to push the team’s edge to 5-0 with 9:51 remaining in the first quarter.
The scoring would not stop there for New Hampshire as at the 6:59 minute mark, the team would cruise 85 yards down the field to end with their quarterback Max Brosmer finding his wide receiver Logan Tomlinson for the 16-yard touchdown catch to extend UNH’s advantage to 12-0 at the end of the first quarter.
It was an ugly quarter for Delaware as they only had 86 yards on offense during that time and the Wildcats collected 268 yards on their four drives in the first.
The Blue Hens cut the lead to three points at the end of the first half.
New Hampshire’s offense would continue to have its way with UD’s defense in the early minutes of the second quarter as the team would drive 75 yards in nine plays to end with their quarterback Max Brosmer hitting his tight end Kyle Lepkowski for a two-yard touchdown to push the lead to 18-0 with 13:03 left in the first half. UNH’s kicker, Nick Mazzie, would miss the PAT after the score on the drive.
Finally, at the 13:03 minute mark in the second quarter, the University of Delaware would start on their first scoring drive at their own 43-yard line. The Blue Hens would drive 57 yards down the field in six plays to end with quarterback Ryan O’Connor finding his wide receiver Jourdan Townsend, who would take in a for the 32-yard score to cut the deficit to 18-7 with 10:41 left in the second quarter.
Delaware would continue to cut into the Wildcats’ double-digits lead in the second quarter, as their next drive at the 4:35 minute mark would end with points as well. Despite being backed up at their own three-yard line, UD went 97 yards in eight plays to end with Ryan O’Connor throwing a pass to his running back Marcus Yarns, who took it 24 yards into the endzone for the score to slice the score to 18-15 at the end of the first half. The Hens also converted a two-point conversion on the drive after the score.
Other than the touchdown, another highlight on the drive was on third and 12 at their own 32-yard line when O’Conner found his wide receiver Jourdan Townsend for a 29-yard completion. In that same play, UNH was called for an Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty, which moved the ball up even further for the University of Delaware to the Wildcats 24-yard line.
Delaware would take the lead for the first time in the third quarter.
After having the momentum swing on their side in the late minutes of the first half, the Blue Hens’ good fortune continued in the early minutes of the third quarter. Delaware would get the ball first in the second half, as the team would start their drive on their own 38-yard line, which they would cruise 62 yards in three plays to end with their quarterback Ryan O’Conner throwing an eight-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Chandler Harvin to give UD a 22-18 lead with 13:22 left in the third quarter.
New Hampshire had not registered a point since the early minutes of the second quarter, but they responded in a big way after the Hens scored to start the third quarter. The Wildcats would answer back with Dylan Laube returning the kickoff for 100 yards to grab back the lead to a score of 25-22 with 13 minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Two drives later, the University of Delaware would start their next scoring at their own 39-yard line with 6:09 left in the third quarter. The Blue Hens would march 61 yards in six plays to end with running back Marcus Yarns dashing and dicing the UNH defense for a 30-yard touchdown to give his team a 29-25 edge at the end of the third quarter.
The Blue Hens defense would step up in the fourth to seal the victory!
UD’s comeback was made in big part by their defense, as after getting trampled on in the first half by a tune of 337 yards, the unit would make the necessary adjustments in the second half and forced New Hampshire to punt twice, turn the ball over on downs twice and defensive back Khalil Dawsey would intercept the ball at the 10:42 minute mark in the fourth quarter. The Blue Hens defense only gave up 144 yards in the second half, which was a giant improvement from the first half.
University of Delaware’s stout defensive play in the fourth would help seal a 29-22 comeback victory over the Wildcats.
