No team scores in the first, but Delaware’s offense gets rolling in the second.
It was all defense in the first quarter, as the two teams’ offenses would rack up a combined 111 yards during that time. University of Delaware’s offensive unit really struggled in the first, by only collecting 38 total yards, but Saint Francis had 73 yards during that same time.
The Red Flash would be the first team to score in the game, as they would start a 15-play, eight-minute, and 58-second drive at the 6:36-minute mark in the first quarter, which would end with Cole Doyle finding Casey McKinney for the four-yard touchdown reception to give their team a 7-0 lead with 12:38 left in the second quarter.
Delaware would not take long to respond as they started their first scoring drive at their own 35-yard line, which they marched 65 yards in six plays to end with running back Marcus Yarns rushing 30 yards for the touchdown to tie the game at seven with 10:05 left in the first half.
SFU’s next drive would be over after only collecting 18 yards on four plays because, on second and four from their 26-yard line, their quarterback Cole Doyle got sacked by the Hens Christian Pierce and then lost the ball, which would be recovered by Ty Davis who took it to the Red Flash’s 18-yard line.
So, would the UD offense capitalize on the short field their defense gave them? Yes, they would, as the team drove 18 yards in four plays to end with quarterback Ryan O’Connor finding Marcus Yarns for the four-yard touchdown reception to give their team a 14-7 lead with 7:27 left in the second quarter.
Four drives later, the University of Delaware would continue to add to their lead, as the team went 56 yards in five plays to end with Ryan O’Connor finding wideout Kym Wimberly Jr. for a short pass, which Wimberly turned into a 48-yard touchdown reception to push the Hens advantage to 21-7 at the end of the first half.
Blue Hens would add 14 more points to their total in the third quarter.
Delaware would start their first drive of the second half at their own 20-yard line with 10:14 left in the third quarter. The Hens would cruise 80 yards down the field in 12 plays to end with Ryan O’Connor finding wide receiver Joshua Youngblood for the 27-yard touchdown catch to extend their team’s advantage to 28-7 with 5:14 remaining in the third quarter.
Fast forward to the 2:51 minute mark in the third quarter, where the Blue Hens would be backed up at their own eight-yard line. Delaware would continue to have their way with Saint Francis’s defense, as they went 92 yards in five plays to end with running back Jo’Nathan Silver dashing one yard for the score to expand his team’s lead to 35-7 with 1:29 left in the third quarter.
Marcus Yarns showed out on this drive as he rushed for 45 yards in the five-play series. Quarterback Ryan O’Connor also had a highlight play on the drive when he found Joshua Youngblood for a 36-yard completion.
Delaware brings home a 42-7 victory over SFU!
Fast forward to the 14:03 minute mark in the fourth quarter, where the Red Flash would begin a nine-minute drive at their own 21-yard line. SFU would collect 31 yards in seven plays, but in their eighth play on third and 15 at Delaware’s 48-yard line, quarterback Nick Whitfield, Jr.’s pass would be intercepted by Hens linebacker Dillon Trainer and taken back 56 yards for a touchdown to give his team a 42-7 advantage with 9:00 minutes left in the game.
Saint Francis would drain the clock on their last drive of the game, as the team went 75 yards on a 12-play, six-minute, and 17-second march down the field, which ended with Nick Whitfield, Jr. finding Luke Edwards for the 11-yard score to cut the lead 42-14 with 2:33 remaining in the game.
The Delaware offense would drain the rest of the time left on the clock to seal a dominating 42-14 victory over SFU.
