The Wilmington University men’s soccer team opened their 2023 season up with a 2-1 victory over the Adelphi University Panthers on Thursday.
The standouts in the game for the Wildcats were sophomore midfielder Tyrese Small, sophomore midfielder Malthe Hannesbo, senior midfielder Yohan Kim, junior midfielder Diego Ramirez, and junior goalkeeper Bas Markus.
Small had three shots, two shots at the goal, and scored one goal in the win.
Hannesbo had four shots, two shots at the goal, and one goal in the victory.
Kim had one shot, one shot at the goal, and one assist in the game.
Ramirez had one shot and one assist in the win.
Markus allowed one goal in 90 minutes and had five saves in the game.
Wilmington would score two late goals in the first half to seal a 2-1 victory!
Adelphi would be buzzing in the early minutes of this game, as they would get on the board first when Pablo Herrera blasted a penalty kick through the net at the 23:52 minute mark to give his team a 1-0 lead.
Three minutes and 52 seconds later, Wilmington would charge back when Malthe Hannesbo found the net with an assist from his teammate Diego Ramirez. Hannesbo’s score would tie the game up at one.
A couple of minutes later, Tyrese Small would head the ball in for a goal to give his team a 2-1 edge at the 30:02 minute mark. Small would be assisted by Yohan Kim in the play.
Two goals in the first half were enough for the Wildcats to bring home their first victory of the season, as neither team scored in the second.
