The Wilmington University women’s soccer team opened the 2023 season on Thursday with a 2-0 victory over Adelphi University Panthers.
The standouts in the game for the Wildcats were redshirt sophomore midfielder Manuela Restrepo, redshirt freshman Evelyn Payne, and goalkeeper Mio Nakajima.
Restrepo had four shots, three shots at the goal, and scored two goals in the win.
Payne had two shots, one shot at the goal, and one assist in the game.
Nakajima allowed zero goals in 90 minutes and had eight saves in the game.
Wilmington wins the game with two goals in the second half!
In the opening half of this game, there would be no sound of a ball hitting the back of the net as the two teams combined for nine shots ( WU 5 & Adelphi 4), but none of them went in for a goal.
It would be a different story in the second half, as Manuela Restrepo would push the ball through the net at the 52:07 minute mark to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Evelyn Payne would assist Restrepo on her score.
Sixteen minutes and 29 seconds later, Manuela Restrepo would continue her scoring ways by booming a penalty kick through the net to seal a 2-0 victory for Wilmington.
Adelphi might not have gotten any shots in for a goal in the second half, but they were firing them off, as they had 13.
