The Wilmington University softball team’s amazing post-season run ends with a tough 6-4 extra-inning loss to Lenoir-Rhyne in Game 10 of the 2024 NCAA DII Softball Championships.

Game 2 Recap:

WilmU would tie the game up at two in the bottom of the first inning, with Junior outfielder Tristyn Stewart scoring on an error and senior outfielder Sara Miller knocking an RBI triple to right field.

The Wildcats would grab the lead in the bottom of the second when junior catcher Emma Zimmerman smoked a RBI single to left center, and senior infielder Lexi Moore pushed in a run with Sac Fly to give their team a 4-2 edge.

Fast forward to the top of the sixth inning, where Lenoir-Rhyne would rally back to score two runs on four hits and one error to tie the game up at four.

Seven innings wouldn’t be enough to find a winner in this game, as it would take till the ninth to find a victor, with Lenoir-Rhyne’s Lora Beth Wood hitting an RBI single up the middle and then Cassidy Wall would score on a fielding error to give their team a 6-4 win.

Before Wilmington matched up with Lenoir-Rhyne in the night game, the team defeated Augustana in the early elimination game. Check out the recap below!

Wilmington University leads by two runs at the end of the first inning.

The Wildcats would strike first in this matchup, as junior outfielder Taylor Gillis knocked a two-run single to right field to give her team a 2-0 edge in the bottom of the opening inning.

The Wildcats would lose the lead at the end of the fourth with the score tied at two.

Augustana would get on the board two innings later when Andrea Cain slugged a solo home run to right field.

The Vikings would tie the game up at two in the top of the fourth inning when Gracey Brink scored on a throwing error from WilmU’s shortstop.

Wilmington University takes home a 5-2 win!

After losing their lead in their fourth, the Wildcats would roar back two innings later to score three runs on two hits and one error to give the team a 5-2 advantage in the bottom of the sixth.

 Taylor Gillis would record her third RBI of the game when she sent a runner home with a bunt to push the score to 3-2.

Two plays later, Graduate student infielder Sam Freeland would push a run home with a Sac fly to take the score to 4-2.

 Senior infielder Julia Thuer would come up next to the plate, where she smacked an RBI single to left field to give her team a 5-2 edge.

Pitching Recap:

 Redshirt sophomore starting pitcher Delani Sheehan went seven innings, gave up six hits, two runs, one earned run, one walk, one home run, and struck out one batter in a win.
