Wilmington University forces a “winner-take-all” game for CACC Championship title with an 8-0 win over Bridgeport

The Wilmington University softball team is one game away from winning the CACC Championship after the team forced a “winner-take-all” for Sunday with an 8-0 win in Game One over the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights.

Game Recap:

Wilmington University takes a three-run lead at the end of the first inning.

The Wildcats would strike first in this game, as Junior outfielder Gabriella Saucedo slapped a two-run single up the middle, and two batters later, senior infielder Haley Downin hit an RBI single through the left side to give their team a 3-0 edge in the bottom of the opening inning.

The Wildcats lead by five runs at the end of the third inning.

Wilmington would add another run to their lead in the second inning when 

Junior outfielder Tristyn Stewart smoked an RBI single up the middle to give her team a 4-0 advantage.

Graduate student infielder Sam Freeland would continue the scoring party in the third inning, as she would go home when junior catcher Emma Zimmerman grounded out from a Sac bunt to put the score at 5-0.

Wilmington University takes home an 8-0 win!

The Wildcats would continue to extend their advantage in the fourth inning, as Tristyn Stewart would record her second RBI of the day when she hit an RBI single to center field to push the score to 6-0.

WilmU would add two more runs (8-0) to lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when junior outfielder Taylor Gillis knocked an RBI single through the left side, and then during the same play, senior outfielder Isabella Eleazar would score on an error from Bridgeport’s third baseman.

Pitching Recap:

Junior starting pitcher Kylee Gunkel dominated the Purple Knights hitters in this win, as she went five innings, one hit, two walks, and struck five batters out.
