Wilmington University closes the regular season with a split versus Dominican (N.Y.)

The Wilmington University softball picked up a split on Thursday versus the Dominican University (N.Y.) Chargers with a 9-1 win (Game One) and 2-1 loss (Game Two).

Wilmington University takes a one-run lead at the end of the first inning.

The Wildcats would light up the scoreboard first in this game, as senior right fielder Sara Miller knocked an RBI single to center field to give her team a 1-0 edge in the top of the opening inning.

The Wildcats lead by two runs at the end of the third inning.

Dominican (N.Y.) would tie the game up at one in the bottom of the second inning when Emily Angulo slapped an RBI double to left center.

WilmU would regain the lead in the top of the third when Senior infielder Lexi Moore pushed in a run with an RBI single, and Junior outfielder Gabriella Saucedo would get a baserunner home with an RBI Sac bunt to give their team a 3-1 advantage.

Wilmington University takes home a 9-1 win!

The Wildcats would add another run to their lead in the top of the fourth inning, as Graduate student infielder Sam Freeland would score on a throwing error to push her team’s edge to 4-1.

WilmU would continue to widen their advantage in the top of the fifth inning, as the team scored five runs on six hits and one error to take a 9-1 lead.

Gabriella Saucedo would start the scoring in the inning by pushing in a run with a Sac Fly to extend her team’s advantage to 5-1.

Sophomore infielder Cassidy Zelano would also score during that play, but it was from a throwing error from the Chargers right fielder to give the team a 6-1 lead.

Sara Miller would come up to the plate next and push a base runner home when she grounded to the shortstop to give her team a 7-1 edge.

Two batters later, junior catcher Emma Zimmerman would smoke a RBI double to left center to take the score to 8-1.

Senior infielder Bri Coyle would be the next batter up, as she hit an RBI single up the middle to give her team a 9-1 lead.

Pitching Recap:

Junior starting pitcher Kylee Gunkel dominated the Chargers hitters in a win, as she went five innings, gave up three hits, one run, one earned run, one walk, and struck out five batters.
