Wilmington University earns a Sunday Sweep over Molloy

The Wilmington University softball team swept the Molloy University Lions on Sunday with a 6-4 win in the first game and a 4-1 victory in the second match.

Game Recap GM1:

Wilmington University trails by two runs at the end of the first inning.

Molloy would light the scoreboard up early in this game as they scored two runs in the top of the opening inning with a single and a Sac Fly.

WilmU takes a three-run lead at the end of the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, it would take one swing for the Wildcats to tie the game up as Freshman catcher/infielder Mia Lane smoked a two-run homer to left center.

Two innings later, Wilmington would take a 5-2 edge when it scored three runs on three hits and one error.

Senior infielder Cassidy Zelano pushed a runner in with a bunt RBI as she reached base on a fielder’s choice, and Freshman Utility player Mia Keenan hit a RBI single to right field in the fourth.

The Wildcats take home a 6-4 win!

In the top of the sixth inning, the Lions inched a little closer to the lead with a solo homer to left center that put the score at 5-3.

Cassidy Zelano would give WilmU a three-run advantage ( 6-3) once again when she scored on a fielding error from Molloy’s right fielder.

The Lions would score one more run in the seventh inning, but the Cats still took home a 6-4 victory.

Pitching Recap:

Sophomore pitcher/infielder Olivia Hitchens earned the win, pitching 5.2 innings, giving up five hits, three runs, two earned runs, one walk, striking out four, and one home run.

Sophomore pitcher/infielder Kasey Xenidis earned the save by going 1.1 innings, two hits, one run, one earned run, and striking out two.

Game Recap GM2:

Wilmington University holds a two-run lead at the end of the third inning.

The game started with silence on the scoreboard for the first two innings, but that would all change in the bottom of the third when WilmU’s bats started to wake up.

In the third inning, the Wildcats scored two runs, with an RBI single to center field from senior second baseman Jess Reed and an RBI double from Maddie Vollmar.

WilmU takes home a 4-1 win!

In the top of the fifth inning, Molloy would cut the deficit to one run (2-1) when a baserunner scored when the batter was hit by a pitch.

Then, in the bottom of the inning, Graduate student Gabriella Saucedo would seal a 4-1 victory for Wilmington with a two-run single to centerfield.

Pitching Recap:

Maddie Vollmar earned the win by pitching seven innings, giving up one hit, one run, one walk, and striking out three batters.
