The Goldey-Beacom College men’s basketball team earned its 13th win of the season with a 90-78 win over the Caldwell University Cougars on Saturday.
Sophomore guard Tre Powell led the team in scoring in the win, with 32 points.
Junior guard Elisha Brown and Junior guard/forward Emarquis Jones each recorded double-doubles in the game. Brown had 15 points and collected 10 rebounds. Jones scored 11 points and had 12 rebounds.
Two other Goldey-Beacom players who scored in double digits in the win were Junior forward Julian Williams (10) and Senior guard Justin Allen(10).
The Lightning had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points off of turnovers (20-15), second-chance points (21-7), rebounds (46-31), and blocks (4-3).
Goldey-Beacom also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 44.9%(31-69) and Caldwell shooting 44.1% (26-59). GBC bested the Cougars at the three-point line as the team shot 37.5% (12-32) and Caldwell 27.8%(5-18). Lightning was also the better team at the free-throw line in this game, as the team shot 84.2%(16-19), and the Cougars shot 72.4% (21-29).

In the first seven minutes of this matchup, it was a back-and-forth affair, and neither team could gain ground in the lead. It wasn’t till the end of this stretch, where the Lightning took a four-point edge (11-7) with Justin Allen making a layup.
Elisha Brown, Tre Powell, and Emarquis Jones powered the GBC offense in the next ten minutes, scoring 17 of the team’s 25 points to push their advantage to 36-25 with 3:28 left in the opening period.
Caldwell struck back by ending the first half with an 18-5 run to grab a 43-41 lead heading into halftime.
The Lightning takes home a 90-78 win!
In the early minutes of the second half, Goldey-Beacom was on a mission to take back the lead with the team outscoring the Cougars 24-13 to hold a 65-56 advantage with 11:49 remaining in the game. Tre Powell led the charge during this stretch, scoring 15 of the team’s 24 points.
Fast forward to the 2:04 minute mark, where Powell would give GBC an 11-point lead (84-73) when he hit a jumper.
The Lightning would score six more points in the final minutes of the game to seal a 90-78 victory over Caldwell.
