Jaiden Guy sinks last-second layup to seal 68-66 win over Georgian Court

The Wilmington University men’s basketball team earned its eighth win of the season on Tuesday with a 68-66 victory over the Georgian Court University Lions.

Senior guard Justin Perez led the team in scoring in the win, with 18 points.

Three other Wilmington players who scored in double digits were Sophomore forward Tre Hawkins (15), Junior guard Jaiden Guy (12), and Junior guard Akeem Taylor (11).

WilmU had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, including second chance points (16-10), points in the paint (48-40), points off turnovers (10-6), fast-break points (8-7), bench points (35-4), assists (10-6), and rebounds (41-34).

The Cats were also the better team at the three-point line in this game, as the team shot  16.7% %(3-18), and the Georgian Court shot 12.5% (2-16).WilmU also bested Dominican at the free-throw line in this game, as the team shot 64.3%(9-14), and the Lions shot 62.1%(18-29).

Wilmington University leads by three at the end of the first half.

The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead in this matchup, holding a 23-13 edge with 8:33 remaining in the opening period. Tre Hawkins, Justin Perez,  Jaiden Guy, and junior forward Zavion Bianchini Jr. led the charge by scoring 20 of the team’s 23 points.

Fast forward to the 2:24 minute mark, where Junior guard Akeem Taylor put WilmU up 32-23 with a made layup.

Georgian Court ended the first half on a high note by dashing off on an 8-2 run to pull the deficit to three points (34-31) heading into halftime.

WilmU takes home a 68-66 win!

The Lions came out ready to fight as the team outscored Wilmington 10-5 to tie the game at 39 with 14:56 left in the second half.

Seven minutes and nine seconds later, Georgian Court grabbed the lead away from Wilmu, when Donavin Crawford nailed a three-pointer to put the score at 51-49.

Over the next seven minutes and 16 seconds, the lead changed hands multiple times, with the score tied three times before settling at 57-57.

At the 2:15 minute mark, the Lions took a three-point lead (62-59) with Amar Lane hitting two free throws.

Right after this, the Cats went on a 7-3 run, which Justin Perez capped off by draining a three-pointer to give his team a 66-64 advantage with 34 seconds left in the game.

Georgian Court tied the game up at 66 with 24 seconds left by making two free throws.

Jaiden Guy would not let his team go down in defeat as he made a layup with seconds left on the clock to give his team a 68-66 win.
