Jones scores 24 in Goldey-Beacom’s 83-73 win over Post

The  Goldey-Beacom College men’s basketball team earned its tenth win of the season on Saturday with an 83-73 victory over the Post University Eagles.

Junior guard/forward Emarquis Jones led the team in scoring in the win with 24 points. Jones did not miss much in this game, as he hit nine of his 11 shots and drained all four of his three-point attempts.

Three other Goldey-Beacom players who scored in double digits in the win were Sophomore guard Tre Powell (18), Junior forward Julian Williams (14), and junior guard Elisha Brown (11).

The Lightning had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (28-18), points off of turnovers (15-8), rebounds (40-32), turnovers (8-9), and blocks (4-0).

Goldey-Beacom also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 47.4%% (27-57) and Post shooting 38.5% (20-52). GBC bested the Eagles at the three-point line as the team shot  29.0%% (9-31) and Post 20%(2-10). Lightning was also the better team at the free-throw line in this game, as the team shot 80.0%%(20-25), and the Eagles shot 77.8% (14-18).

Goldey-Beacom holds a two-point lead at the end of the first half.

Post would start the game by jumping out to a 13-7 advantage with 14:28 remaining in the opening half.

GBC fought back by outscoring the Eagles 14-4 to grab a 21-17 lead with 10:49 left on the clock in the first half. Emarquis Jones led the charge by scoring eight of the 14 points during that time. Jones nailed back-to-back three-pointers during this stretch.

Post cut the Lightning’s lead to one point (25-24) with a 7-4 run, leaving 7:56 in the opening half.

Goldey-Beacom would put some breathing room into their lead when the team outscored the Eagles 12-5 to take a 37-29 edge with 3:34 left in the first half. Tre Powell saw the basket well during this stretch, scoring five of the 12 points.

Post outscored GBC 9-3 for the rest of the first half to slice the deficit to two points (40-38).

The Lightning takes home an 83-73 win!

Goldey-Beacom came out with a renewed pep in their step in the early minutes of the second half by going on a 15-7 run to expand their advantage to 55-45 with 16:08 left in the game. The Lightning were hot from the three-point line during that stretch, nailing five. Emarquis Jones sank two of those five shots.

The Eagles punched back by dashing off on a 14-7 run to pull the deficit to three points (62-59) with 9:49 left in the game.

GBC outscored Post 21-14 for the rest of the second half to seal an 83-73 win. Julian Williams, Tre Powell, and Sophomore guard Anthony Akande lit it up during this time, scoring 17 of the team’s 21 points.
