Hawkins Scores 30 as Wilmington University Edges Dominican (N.Y.) 86-83

The Wilmington University men’s basketball team earned its sixth win of the season on Saturday with an 86-83 victory over the Dominican University of New York Chargers.

Sophomore forward Tre Hawkins led the team in scoring in the win with 30 points.

Three other Wilmington players who scored in double digits were Junior guard Jaiden Guy(17), Sophomore guard Jaylin Horsey(19), and junior forward Zavion Bianchini Jr.(12).

WilmU had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, including points in the paint (48-38), second chance points (18-10), rebounds (35-29), and steals (12-10).

The Wildcats also bested Dominican at the free-throw line in this game, as the team shot 88.2%(15-17), and the Chargers shot 76.2%(16-21).

Wilmington University trails by ten at the end of the first half.

The Wildcats jumped out to a fast start in the matchup with an 18-8 advantage with 14:06 left in the opening half. Jaylin Horsey and Tre Hawkins led the charge, scoring 12 of the 18 points.

Dominican punched back by outscoring WilmU 23-10 to grab a 31-28 edge with 6:41 left in the first half.

The Chargers continued to ride the momentum by outscoring the Cats 19-12 for the rest of the opening half to take a 50-40 lead into halftime.

The Wildcats take home an 86-83 win!

Wilmington came out with a bang in the early minutes of the second half by going on a 22-14 run to close the gap to two points (64-62) with 11:54 remaining in the game. Jaylin Horsey, Tre Hawkins, and Zavion Bianchini Jr. caused the problems for the Chargers’ defenders, scoring 16 of the 22 points.

Fast forward to the 5:57 minute mark, where Dominican’s Isaiah Honis made a layup to give his team a 76-72 lead.

WilmU fought back by outscoring the Chargers 7-2 to take a 79-78 edge with 2:19 left in the game. Jaiden Guy hit the layup to give the Cats the lead.

The lead went back and forth for the next couple of minutes, which had Dominican holding an 83-82 lead after making two free throws with 29 seconds left in the second half.

Wilmington scored four straight points to seal an 86-83 win over the Chargers.
