The Goldey-Beacom College men’s basketball team earned its seventh win on Thursday with a 96-74 victory over the Mercy University Mavericks.
Senior guard Justin Allen led the team in scoring in the win, with 24 points.
Two other Goldey-Beacom players who scored in double digits in the win were Junior guard/forward Emarquis Jones (14) and Sophomore guard Tre Powell (18).
Jones also had four steals in this game.
The Lightning had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (62-30), points off of turnovers (27-17), fast-break points (27-6), bench points (47-24), rebounds (38-33), assists (11-10), turnovers (13-22), steals (13-5).
GBC also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 54.9% (39-71) and Mercy shooting 43.3% (26-60). The Lightning also outshot the Mavericks from the free-throw line, with the team shooting 78.6%(11-14) and Mercy shooting 76.2% (16-21).

Mercy came on fire in the early minutes of this game as they jumped out to an 18-9 edge with 13:20 left in the opening half.
The Lightning struck back by dashing off on a 12-4 run to capture a 21-20 advantage with 8:30 remaining in the first half. Emarquis Jones and Tre Powell scored all 12 points during that stretch.
In the next seven minutes and seven seconds, GBC continued to have their way, as they outscored the Mavericks 19-8 to push the lead to 40-28 with 1:02 left in the first half. Justin Allen led the charge, scoring nine of the team’s 19 points.
Mercy would end the first half by scoring four unanswered points to slice the deficit to eight (40-32).
The Lightning takes home a 96-74 win!
Fast forward to the 12:41 minute mark in the second half, where Justin Allen would make back-to-back layups to extend Goldey-Beacom’s advantage to 12 points (58-46).
In the next seven minutes and 25 seconds, GBC’s lead continued to grow as they outscored the Mavericks 25-19 to push the score to 81-65 with 4:52 left in the game. Tre Powell and Sophomore guard Anthony Akande had the hot hand during this run, scoring 14 of the team’s 25 points.
Goldey-Beacom closed out the game by outscoring Mercy 15-9 and sealing a comfortable 96-74 win. The Lightning made three of their five shots from the three-point line during this time.
