The Wilmington University men’s basketball team snaps a five-game losing streak with a 98-76 win over the Goldey-Beacom College Lightning.
Junior guard Jaiden Guy led the team in scoring in the win, with 25 points.
Sophomore forward Tre Hawkins recorded a double-double in the game with 23 points and 11 rebounds.
Three other Wilmington players who scored in double digits were Sophomore guard Denim Perkins (11), Sophomore guard Jaylin Horsey (11), and Junior guard Akeem Taylor (12).
WilmU had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, including bench points (36-27), fast-break points (21-12), points in the paint (56-28), points off of turnovers (25-11), turnovers (16-20), assists (23-14), steals (12-8), and blocks (4-3).
Wilmington University also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 59.4% (38-64) and Goldey-Beacom shooting 35.4%(23-65). The Wildcats were also the better team at the three-point line in this game, as the team shot 50.0%(8-16), and the Lightning shot 26.5% (9-34).WilmU also bested Goldey-Beacom at the free-throw line in this game, as the team shot 70.0%(14-20), and the Lightning shot 67.7%(21-31).

The two in-state rivals had a battle going in the first six minutes of this game, with the score tied twice, and the largest lead during that was four. Denim Perkins drained a three-pointer at the end of this stretch for the Wildcats to tie the game at ten.
After that, WilmU went on to score five unanswered points, including another made three-pointer from Perkins to put the score at 15-10 with 12:37 left in the opening half.
The Lightning struck back by going on a 10-6 run to slice the deficit to one point (21-20) with 9:50 remaining in the first half.
Fast forward to the 2:52 minute mark, where Tre Hawkins made a layup to give Wilmington a six-point lead (36-30).
Goldey-Beacom outscored the Cats 5-3 in the final minutes of the first half to pull the score to 39-35.
WilmU takes home a 98-76 win!
The Wildcats surged in the early moments of the second half, going on a 12-4 run to take a 51-39 lead with 16:13 remaining in the game. Akeem Taylor made a significant impact during this stretch, hitting a three-pointer and recording two blocks. 18 seconds later, he added another block to his stat sheet.
Four minutes and 24 seconds later, Jaylin Horsey capped off the Wildcats’ 20-10 run with a three-pointer to put the score at 71-49 with 11:25 left on the clock.
At the 4:52 minute mark, Jaiden Guy extended Wilmington’s advantage to 90-66 with a made layup.
WilmU added eight more points in the final minutes of the game to seal a dominating 98-76 win over Goldey-Beacom.
