Goldey-Beacom earns first win of the season with 70-56 victory over Wilmington University

The Goldey-Beacom College women’s basketball team earned its first win of the season on Tuesday with a 70-56 victory over the Wilmington University Wildcats.

Sophomore guard Marasia Dyes led the team in scoring in the win with 12 points.

Senior guard Rory Ciszkowski was locked on the boards all night, collecting ten.

Sophomore forward Lydia Betz stopped a lot of shots in this game, as she had five blocks.

The Lightning had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points off of turnovers (26-15), fast-break points (15-8), bench points (23-13), assists (14-12), turnovers (16-20), blocks (8-4), and steals (13-10).

Goldey-Beacom also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 39.7% (25-63) and Wilmington shooting 31.9% (23-72). GBC bested the Wildcats at the three-point line as the team shot 36.0% (9-25) and Wilmington 15.8%(3-19). Lightning was also the better team at the free-throw line in this game, as the team shot 61.1%(11-18), and the Wildcats shot 53.8% (7-13).

The Lightning leads by eight points at the end of the first quarter.

Goldey-Beacom started this game fast, jumping out to a 12-3 edge with 4:50 left in the opening period. Rory Ciszkowski did a little of everything during this run, hitting a three-pointer, recording two steals, and collecting a rebound.

The Lightning had all the momentum as they followed that up, outscoring the Wildcats 7-2 in the next couple of minutes, to push their advantage to 14 points (19-5). Four of the seven points came from the free-throw line.

Wilmington would score six straight points to end the first quarter to cut the deficit to eight points (19-11).

Goldey-Beacom leads by 11 at the end of the first half.

WilmU continued their hot streak from the late minutes of the opening quarter, scoring seven unanswered points, slicing the lead to one point (19-18) with 7:05 remaining in the second quarter.

GBC wouldn’t lose its lead, as the team outscored Wilmington 19-9 for the rest of the first half to take a 38-27 edge into halftime. The Lightning had the hot touch from the three-point line during this stretch, draining four of them. Rory Ciszkowski, Lydia Betz, freshman guard, Angie Zagone, and senior guard Karlee Lemon each nailed one during the run.

The Lightning leads by 15 at the end of the third quarter.

Marasia Dyes and junior forward Genesis Garcia took charge in the third quarter by scoring 13 of Goldey’s 22 points to help them take a 60-45 advantage into the fourth.

Goldey-Beacom takes home a 70-56 win!

Fast forward to the 8:52 minute mark in the fourth, where Karlee Lemon hit a three-pointer to extend the Lightning’s edge to 18 points (65-47).

WilmU outscored Goldey-Beacom 9-5 for the rest of the game, but the GBC still took home a 70-56 victory.
