Blanchet’s Late Three Caps Goldey-Beacom’s Second-Half Surge in 68–65 Win Over Chestnut Hill

The  Goldey-Beacom College men’s basketball team earned its fifth win of the season on Wednesday with a 68-65 victory over the Chestnut Hill College Griffins.

Junior forward  Julian Williams and Sophomore guard Tre Powell led the team in scoring in the win, with 15 points. Williams also had three blocks in the game. Both players had two steals in the victory.

The Lightning had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (34-28), points off of turnovers (14-5), bench points (22-7), turnovers (9-17), blocks (4-3), and steals (10-3).

Goldey-Beacom also outshot the Griffins from the free-throw line, with the team shooting 68.8%(11-16) and Chestnut Hill shooting 63.2% (12-19).

The Lightning trailed by two points at the end of the first half.

Chestnut Hill started this game with a blazing fire, jumping out to an 18-8 edge with 14:21 left in the opening half.

Goldey-Beacom struck back by going on an 18-4 run to grab a 26-22 advantage with 7:30 remaining in the first half. Julian Williams led the charge during that time, scoring six of the 18 points.

The Griffins scored four straight points to tie the score at 26 with 5:49 left in the opening period.

GBC bounced back by outscoring Chestnut Hill 10-7 to take a 36-33 lead with 2:08 left in the first half. Tre Powell and Williams caused problems for the Griffins’ defenders, scoring all ten points.

Chestnut Hill ended the first half just like how they started it, with a fire, as the team scored five straight points to grab a 38-36 advantage.

The Lightning takes home a 68-65 win!

Fast forward to the 6:52-minute mark in the second half, where Chestnut looked like they were in full control of this game with Jeremiah Gorham hitting a jump shot to push his team’s edge to 11 points (62-51).

Goldey-Beacom wasn’t waving the white flag just yet, as they charged back to score 11 straight points to tie the game at 62 with 1:43 remaining on the clock. Sophomore guards Anthony Akande and Brian Blanchet had the hot hand during this stretch, scoring seven of the team’s 11 points.

Free throws were also a key factor during this run, as the team made six of its eight attempts.

The Lightning outscored the Griffins 6-3 in the final minutes of the game, as Blanchet would hit the game-winning three-pointer at the 23-second mark to seal a 68-65 win.
