Cherisier Shines with 17 as Blue Hens Top Loyola Maryland 67–55

The University of Delaware women’s basketball team earned its third win of the season with a 67-55 victory over the Loyola Maryland Greyhounds on Wednesday.

Junior center Ande’a Cherisier led the team in scoring in the win, with 17 points.

Three other Hens players scored in double digits: Sophomore guard Trinity Vance (14), Junior guard Lay Fantroy (12), and Freshman guard Kailah Correa (11).

UD had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included fast-break points (5-0), points off of turnovers (20-18), blocks (3-1), and rebounds (32-26).

The Blue Hens also had the advantage in shooting, with the team boasting 47%(20-43) and Loyola Maryland 40%(22-55). UD also bested the Greyhounds from the free-throw line, with the team shooting 88%(21-24) and Loyola Maryland shooting 54%(7-13).

Delaware leads by five at the end of the first quarter.

The Blue Hens started this game fast by jumping out to a 12-2 edge at the 5:30 minute mark in the opening period. Ande’a Cherisier and Senior guard Ella Wanzer led the charge, scoring ten of the 12 points.

Loyola Maryland answered back by outscoring UD 10-5 to cut the deficit to five points (17-12) at the end of the first quarter.

The Hens lead by three points at the end of the first half.

The Greyhounds’ momentum from the late opening quarter carried over into the early minutes of the second quarter, as the team scored six straight points to take an 18-17 lead with nine minutes on the clock.

Delaware shook off their cold streak and went on a 15-8 run to grab a 32-26 advantage with 3:50 left in the first half. Ande’a Cherisier and Lay Fantroy made buckets with ease during this time, scoring nine of the 15 points.

Loyola Maryland punched back by scoring three straight points to tighten the score to 32-29 at the end of the opening half.

UD leads by ten at the end of the third quarter.

The Blue Hens came out firing in the opening minutes of the second half, dashing off on a 14-6 run to push their advantage to 46-35 with 5:05 left in the third.  Trinity Vance had the hot hand during this time, scoring five of the 14 points.

UD added seven more points to their total for the rest of the quarter to end with a 53-43 edge.

Delaware would score 14 more points in the final quarter to seal a 67-55 victory over the Greyhounds. Kailah Correa made eight shots from the free-throw line during this time.
