Akande’s Last-Second Layup Lifts Goldey-Beacom to 66-65 Win Over Caldwell

The  Goldey-Beacom College men’s basketball team moved its record to 4-1 on Tuesday with a last-second 66-65 win over the Caldwell University Cougars.

Sophomore guard Tre Powell led the team in scoring in the win, with 14 points.

Three other Goldey-Beacom players who scored in double digits in the win were junior forward  Julian Williams(12), Junior guard/forward Emarquis Jones(11), and junior guard Elisha Brown (11).

The Lightning had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (32-30),points off of turnovers (19-15), assists (13-12), and turnovers (14-15).

GBC also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 38.5 % (25-65) and Caldwell shooting 35.3% (24-68). The Lightning also outshot the Cougars from the three-point line, with the team shooting 20-8% (5-24) and Caldwell shooting 20% (4-20).

Goldey-Beacom leads by four points at the end of the first half.

The first ten minutes saw the teams evenly matched, with the score tied six times and the lead constantly shifting. GBC had the last bucket during the stretch with  Julian Williams making a layup to give his team a two-point edge (17-15).

Goldey-Beacom would then build off that bucket and go on a 17-7 run to take a 34-22 advantage with 3:06 left in the opening half. Williams, Elisha Brown,  and  Emarquis Jones caused trouble for the Caldwell defenders during this time, scoring 13 of the 17 points.

The Cougars roared back in the final minutes of the first half, outscoring the Lightning 10-2 to slice the deficit to four points (36-32).

The Lightning takes home a 66-65 win!

Goldey-Beacom extended its lead to 11 points (50-39) with 12:49 remaining, following a 14-7 run against Caldwell. Tre Powell saw the basket clearly on that run, scoring seven of the 14 points.

The Cougars scratched back by outscoring the Lightning 11-1 to pull the deficit to one point (51-50) with 9:20 left in the game.

GBC struck back, scoring seven straight points to give the team a 57-50 advantage with 6:54 remaining in the second half.

Caldwell would continue to fight by dashing out on a 15-5 run to grab a 65-62 edge with 50 seconds left in the game.

Junior guard Masud Stewart would bring Goldey within one point of the lead with a layup at the 40-second mark.

With time running out and GBC trailing by one, Sophomore guard Anthony Akande drove to the basket and sank a layup with five seconds remaining, sealing a dramatic 66-65 victory over Caldwell.
