The Wilmington University men’s soccer team defeated the Roberts Wesleyan University Redhawks in the first round of the NCAA DII Men’s Soccer Championship in dominating fashion with a score of 6-2 on Friday. This win marks the Cats’ first victory in the NCAA tourney since 2018, when they beat Le Moyne in the first round.

The Wildcats didn’t waste any time scoring in this matchup, with Sophomore forward Michiharu Takanashi blasting in the first goal of the game to give his team a 1-0 edge at the five-minute mark. WilmU graduate student forward Theo Faillon and Senior midfielder Shuntaro Morimoto assisted on the score.
At the 21:36 mark, Faillon would rocket in a Penalty Kick goal to give WilmU a 2-0 advantage.
Roberts Wesleyan punched back at the 28:21 minute mark by finding the back of the net to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Six minutes and 34 seconds later, Wilmington cushioned its lead a little more when Freshman midfielder Jacques Mason criss-crossed defenders and found the net to give his team a 3-1 edge at the end of the first half. Freshman defender Isaak Simic assisted on Mason’s score.
WilmU takes home a 6-2 win!
The Wildcats continued to roar in the second half. At the 49:32 minute mark, Shuntaro Morimoto joined the scoring party to give his team a 4-1 advantage. Theo Faillon and sophomore defender Mylan Le Baut assisted on the score.
Five minutes and 83 seconds later, Senior midfielder Alex Tarway had the highlight goal of the night by kicking the ball over the Redhawks ‘ defenders’ heads from 35 yards out and getting it under the crossbar in the upper left corner to push the score to 5-1. Jacques Mason assisted on the score.
Freshman forward Ludvig Danielsson scored the last goal of the night for the Cats to give the team a dominating 6-1 edge. Michiharu Takanashi assisted on the score.
Roberts Wesleyan scored a goal in the final minutes of the second half, but Wilmington still took home a 6-2 win.
