Delaware State leads by 13 at the end of the first quarter.

Saint Francis opened with the ball but quickly went three-and-out.

Unlike SFU, the Hornets capitalized on their opening possession, marching 35 yards in 11 plays, capped by senior running back Marquis Gillis dashing three yards for the score to give his team a 6-0 edge with 9:02 left in the opening quarter. DSU missed the extra point after the touchdown.

Two possessions later, Delaware State was back at it again, driving 80 yards in 11 plays. Junior running back James Jones pushed in for a one-yard score to give his team a 13-0 advantage at the end of the first.

Another highlight on the drive was the very first play, when senior Dasheen Jackson broke free for 32 yards to set the Hornets up at the Red Flash’s 48-yard line.

After a quick three-and-out by Saint Francis to start the second quarter, DSU would have a fast drive, but it would end differently.

The Hornets’ possession started at their own 10-yard line, but despite being backed up, Delaware State’s James Jones galloped 90 yards for the touchdown to give his team a 20-0 lead with 13:48 remaining in the opening half.

SFU ended their silence on the scoreboard at the 9:30 mark, kicking a 22-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 20-3. The Red Flash went 55 yards in seven plays on that scoring drive.

Three possessions later, DSU’s offense would get the ball back at their own 30-yard line after the team’s senior linebacker Cameron Wright recovered a fumble by Saint Francis’s wideout.

Delaware State did not waste that turnover, as they turned it into an 11-play, 70-yard touchdown drive that extended the team’s lead to 26-3 at halftime. The score came from Jones’s third touchdown run of the game at the one-yard line.
