Goldey-Beacom earns a sweep versus Bridgeport

The Goldey-Beacom College baseball team swept the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights on Wednesday with a 13-11 win in the first game and a 4-3 victory in the second.

Game Recap GM1:

Goldey-Beacom leads by two runs at the end of the first inning.

The Lightning would strike first in this game when Freshman infielder Zach Smethers hit a two-run triple in the bottom of the opening inning to give his team a 2-0 edge.

The Lightning leads by ten runs at the end of the third inning.

Bridgeport scored their first run in the top of the third inning, with an RBI single to center field to tighten the match to 2-1.

In the bottom of the third, Goldey-Beacom’s bats powered up to another level by scoring nine runs on five hits and one error to take an 11-1 advantage.

Senior infielder Jaden Dickerson started the scoring in the inning when he slapped an RBI single to right-center.

Two plays later, Zach Smethers pushed in a run with a Sac Fly to center field.

A couple of plays later, Senior catcher Adam McEvoy continued the scoring party by hitting an RBI single through the right side.

The following two runs for GBC came from a fielding error and then a wild pitch.

 Sophomore infielder Bobby Stewart capped off the inning with a four-run homer to left center to give his team an 11-1 lead.

Goldey-Beacom takes home a 13-11 win!

In the bottom of the fourth, the Lightning would widen their advantage to 13-1, when Senior outfielder Matt Benner pushed home a run when he reached first base on a walk, and freshman infielder  Brent Williams got a runner home when he grounded out into a double play.

The Purple Knights would fight back in the top of the fifth when they had a two-run homer to cut the score to 13-3.

Bridgeport continued to climb back in this game, scoring five runs on three hits to slice the deficit to 13-8.

The Purple Knights pulled with three runs (13-10) in the top of the seventh, with a three-run homer to left field.

Bridgeport would score one more run in the eighth but Goldey hung on to win 13-11.

Pitching Recap:

Goldey-Beacom used five pitchers in the game, including junior pitcher Connor Blence, who pitched 5.1 innings, gave up four hits, four runs, five earned runs, four walks, struck out five, hit one batter, and earned the win.

Senior pitcher Wyatt Atkinson went 1.2 innings, gave up one hit, and earned the save.

Goldey-Beacom takes home a 4-3 win!

Bridgeport would light up the scoreboard first in this game, with a RBI single to center field to give them a 1-0 edge in the opening inning.

The Lightning found their way to the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning, with three RBIs from walks and a two-run single to center field from Junior outfielder Anthony Charles to give the team a 4-1 lead.

Bridgeport would score two runs in the top of the third to tighten the game to 4-3.

The pitching did the rest for the Bolts only giving up two hits for the rest of the game to seal a 4-3 win.

Pitching Recap:

Senior pitcher Ryan Pozo went six innings, gave up seven innings, three runs, three earned runs, one walk, struck out 11, and earned the win.

Freshman pitcher  Britton Wildasin went one inning, struck out two hitters, and earned the save.
