Season Review: Delaware State’s Robert Smith

Our 2024-2025 season player review series continues with the Delaware State University men’s basketball team as the spotlight turns to senior guard Robert Smith.

Smith led the team in scoring this season, with 18 points per game.

When the Hornets needed to score a bucket this season, they turned to Smith, who made it look easy, recording double-digits in 27 games. He also posted 14 games where he scored over 20 points. The DSU guard also netted one 30-point game this year.

The Philly native’s game-high in points this season came on March 3rd versus Morgan State, where he recorded 34 points. Smith made 12 of his 24 shots, six of 13 tries from the three-point line, and drained four of five free throws.

Another good shooting night for the Delaware State guard came on January 11th in a 76-75 win over South Carolina State, where Smith recorded 21 points. He made seven of his ten shots, five out of seven attempts from the three-point line, and drained two free throws.

Near the end of the season, the DSU senior posted another highlight game on March 6th in a 75-68 win over UMES, where he posted 26 points. Smith made nine of his 12 shots, three of five attempts from the three-point line, and nailed five of seven free throws.

When the Hornets guard wasn’t scoring, he was locked on the boards, landing fifth on the team in rebounds per game with three. Smith had four games, posting six rebounds.

The Pennsylvania native didn’t do all the scoring himself, as he knew how to dish the ball to his teammates for a score. He led the team in assists per game with 2.9. He posted three games with six assists in the season. Smith also recorded eight assists in a game this year.

The Delaware State senior also had fast hands this season, landing second on the team in steals per game with 1.6.

Smith averaged 18 points per game, three rebounds, and 2.9 assists in 30 games.
