Ericka Huggins records a double-double in Delaware State’s 84-55 victory over Virginia-Lynchburg

The Delaware State University women’s basketball team earned their fourth win on the season on Saturday with an 84-55 victory over the Division III Virginia-Lynchburg Dragons.

Freshman forward Ericka Huggins was the leading scorer in the win with 20 points. She also recorded a double-double by collecting 13 rebounds.

Three other DSU players who scored in double-digits were sophomore point guard Kiarra Mcelrath (15), junior point guard Najah Lane (10), and Freshman guard Brooke Barnes.

Delaware State had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included fast-break points (19-6), points off of turnovers (23-16), blocks (5-3), assists (19-11), and rebounds (46-29).

DSU also had the advantage in shooting, with the team boasting 47.0(31-66) and Virginia-Lynchburg 34.5 (19-55). Delaware State also bested the Dragons from the three-point line, with the team shooting 38.2( 13-34) and VL shooting 25.0(3-12). The Hornets also outshot Virginia-Lynchburg at the free-throw line, with the team shooting 75.0(9-12), and the Dragons 70.0(14-20).

Delaware State leads by seven at the end of the first quarter.

The Hornets had no problem finding the net in the early minutes of the opening period, as the team took a 14-4 edge with 3:45 remaining in the first quarter. Brooke Barnes and Ericka Huggins had the hot hand scoring eight of the team’s 14 points.

Virginia-Lynchburg came roaring back by outscoring DSU 9-6 to cut the deficit to seven points (20-13).

The Hornets take a 16-point lead at the end of the first half.

Delaware State came out fast in the early minutes of the second quarter, as they went on a 15-4 to extend their lead to 35-17 with 6:06 remaining in the first half. Ericka Huggins caused problems for the Dragons’ defense scoring nine of the team’s 15 points.

The Hornets would score six more points in the quarter to end the first half with a 41-25 advantage.

DSU leads by 23 points at the end of the third quarter.

It was the Brooke Barnes and Ericka Huggins show in the third quarter, as the duo scored 11 of the Del State’s 21 points to head into the fourth with a 62-39 lead.

The Hornets take home an 84-55 victory!

Fast forward to the 4:40 minute mark, where Ericka Huggins made a jump shot to expand DSU’s advantage to 76-47.

Delaware State would add eight more points to their score to seal an 84-55 victory over the Dragons.
