Watson & Robinson notch double-doubles in Delaware State’s 126-38 victory over Virginia-Lynchburg

The Delaware State University men’s basketball team earned their ninth win of the season on Saturday with a 126-38 victory over the Division III Virginia-Lynchburg Dragons.

Freshman forward Kareem Watson led the team in scoring in the win with 21 points. Watson also recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds.

Senior guard Martaz Robinson also recorded a double-double in the game by scoring 11 points and collecting 12 rebounds.

Four other DSU players who scored in double-digits were Senior guard Robert Smith (19), senior forward Muneer Newton (10), Senior center Raymond Somerville (12), and Dean Shepherd (11).

Delaware State had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (80-22), Fast-break points (34-3), points off of turnovers (36-4), turnovers (6-19), blocks (8-0), steals (15-4), assists (30-2), and rebounds (63-25).

DSU also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 58.2(53-91) and Virginia-Lynchburg shooting 22.2 (14-63). The Hornets were also the better team at the three-point line in this game, as the team shot 38.7(12-31), and the Dragons shot 0.0 (0-14). Delaware State also outshot VUL at the free-throw line in this game, as the team shot 66.7(8-12), and the Dragons shot 62.5(10-16).

Delaware State leads by 51 at the end of the first half.

The Hornets easily scored buckets in the early minutes of the opening period, taking a 33-4 edge with 11:32 remaining in the first half. Kareem Watson caused problems for Virginia-Lynchburg’s defense, scoring 15 of the 33 points.

Fast forward to the 1:50 minute mark, Robert Smith would drain a three-pointer to push DSU’s advantage to 58-12.

Delaware State would add seven more points to the score in the opening period to go to halftime with a 65-14 lead.

DSU continued to dominate when the second half opened up, outscoring the Dragons 61-24 to take home a 126-38 victory.
