Robinson scores 15 points in Hornets 80-77 win over Loyola Maryland

The Delaware State University men’s basketball team earned their fourth victory of the season on Saturday, with the team beating the Loyola University Maryland Greyhounds 80-77.

Senior guard Martaz Robinson led the Hornets in scoring in the win with 15 points.

Four other DSU players who scored in double-digits were Senior guard Robert Smith (10), Freshman forward Kaseem Watson (14), senior forward Alston Andrews (13), and senior forward Muneer Newton (10).

Delaware State had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (48-32), blocks (2-1), assists (17-14), and rebounds (36-31).

DSU also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 52.5

(31-59) and the Greyhounds shooting 44.3(27-61).

Delaware State leads by three at the end of the first half.

The Hornets would run out to a 7-3 advantage to start the game, with Robert Smith capping off the run with a three-pointer.

Loyola Maryland would strike right back by going on an 11-4 run to grab a 14-11 edge with 12:37 remaining in the opening half.

Two minutes and 88 seconds later, the Greyhounds would push their lead to five (25-17) when Veljko Ilic made a layup.

Starting at the 9:22 minute mark, DSU went on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 25 with 6:32 left in the first half. Freshman forward Kaseem Watson collected the rebounds (3) and scored four of the team’s eight points during this time.

Delaware State would score eight more points in the first half to take a 33-30 edge into halftime.

The Hornets take home an 80-77 win!

Loyola Maryland came out with a new pep in their step in the early minutes of the second half by going on a 13-2 run to take a 43-35 lead with 17:51 remaining in the game.

In the next six minutes and 12 seconds, DSU shook off their cold streak and outscored the Greyhounds 18-10 to tie the game at 53 with 11:30 left in the second half.  Kaseem Watson, Alston Andrews, and Robert Smith scored 13 of the team’s 18 points during that time.

Fast forward to the 5:51 minute mark, where Loyola Maryland’s Jordan Stiemke gave his team a four-point edge (68-64) when he hit a jump shot.

A minute and 30 seconds later, Delaware State’s Martaz Robinson drained a three-pointer, and he then followed it up with a layup to give his team a 69-68 advantage with 4:05 left in the game.

The lead was short-lived as Stiemke hit a jumper seconds later to give the Greyhounds a 70-69 edge.

Robinson continued to be a point machine for the Hornets, scoring five straight points to give the team a 74-70 lead with 1:54 remaining in the second half.

DSU would score six more points in the game to seal an 80-77 victory over Loyola Maryland.
