Smith & Watson combine for 38 points in Delaware State’s 111-43 win over Penn State-Wilkes-Barre

The Delaware State University men’s basketball team earned their third win of the season on Tuesday by defeating Penn State – Wilkes-Barre Mountain Lions 111-43.

Senior guard Robert Smith and freshman forward Kaseem Watson led the Hornets in scoring in the win, each scoring 19 points.

Two other DSU players who scored in double-digits were senior guard Martaz Robinson (11) and senior forward Alston Andrews (10).

Delaware State had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (58-20), fast-break points (38-8), points off turnovers (29-8), turnovers (9-19), blocks (3-1), steals (15-5), assists (28-11), and rebounds (49-22).

DSU also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 57.5

(42-73) and Penn State – Wilkes-Barre shooting 27.6(16-58). The Hornets were also the better team at the three-point line in this game, as the team shot 47.4%(9-19), and the Mountain Lions shot 10.5(2-19). Delaware State also outshot Penn State – Wilkes-Barre at the free-throw line in this game, as the team shot 81.8(18-22), and the Mountain Lions shot 69.2(9-13).

Delaware State leads by 33 points at the end of the first half.

The Hornets came out flying in the early minutes of the opening period by taking a 24-9 advantage with 11:40 remaining on the clock. Robert Smith, Martaz Robinson, and Kaseem Watson made trouble for the Mountain Lions, scoring 20 of the team’s 24 points.

Fast forward to the 3:06 minute mark, where DSU’s Alston Andrews rocked the rim with a dunk to give his team a 28-point edge(50-22).

Delaware State would add seven more points to their score for the rest of the opening period to push their lead to 57-24 heading into halftime.

DSU takes home a 111-43 victory!

The Hornets’ offense kept humming along in the early minutes of the second half as senior Center Raymond Somerville capped off a 32-17 run with a layup that extended the team’s advantage to 89-41 with 7:47 remaining in the game.

Delaware State kept the pedal to the metal for the rest of the second half by outscoring Penn State – Wilkes-Barre 22-2 to seal a 111-43 victory. Sophomore guard Dean Shepherd and freshman guard John Clemmons were clutch down the stretch, scoring 14 of the team’s 22 points.
