The Delaware State University women’s basketball team earned their third win of the season on Monday by hanging on to secure a 76-73 victory over Division II Bloomfield College Bears.
Sophomore guard Mahogany Cottingham led the Hornets in scoring in the win with 24 points.
Two other DSU players who scored in double-digits were Freshman forward Ericka Huggins (10) and sophomore point guard Kiarra Mcelrath (18).
Sophomore forward McKenzie Stewart was locked on the boards all night, collecting 12 rebounds.
Delaware State had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (32-28), fast-break points (14-12), points off of turnovers (25-15), turnovers (21-23), blocks (6-3), steals (13-4), assists (17-14), and rebounds (44-38).

DSU came out swinging in the opening quarter, as the team blasted off to a 25-10 edge heading into the second. Mahogany Cottingham led the way for the Hornets by scoring 15 of the team’s 25 points. She made five shots from the three-point line during this run.
The Hornets lead by 11 points at the end of the first half.
Bloomfield would find a rhythm in the early minutes of the second quarter, outscoring Delaware State 11-6 to slice the deficit to ten points (31-21) with 7:47 remaining in the opening half. Bianca Ellis could not be stopped from downtown, sinking three shots from there.
The Hornets would stop the Bears from getting any closing to their lead by outscoring them 10-9 for the rest of the half to grab a 41-30 advantage.
DSU leads by ten points at the end of the third quarter.
Bloomfield would continue to hang with the Hornets in this game. They went on a 14-7 run to start the second half, cutting the score to four points (48-44) with 4:52 left in the third quarter. Anisha Able, Taneshia Tucker, and Kamrin Babbs made trouble for DSU’s defense scoring all 14 points.
Starting at the 4:28 minute mark, Delaware State added some cushion to its lead by outscoring the Bears 11-5, heading into the fourth with a 59-49 edge. Freshman forward Ericka Huggins and sophomore point guard Kiarra Mcelrath had the hot hand during this run, scoring eight of the team’s 11 points.

Bloomfield would stay within punching distance of the lead by outscoring the Hornets 13-9 in the early minutes of the fourth quarter to pull the score to six points (68-62) with 4:46 left in the game. Bianca Ellis drained two shots from the three-point line during this run.
The Bears would continue to make the DSU fans nervous with 36 seconds left in the game Anisha Able made a free throw to slice the deficit to one point (74-73).
DSU would hang on to win 76-73 by Kiarra Mcelrath sinking two free throw shots with 14 seconds left on the clock.
