Wilmington University baseball picks up a sweep over Caldwell

Wilmington University trails by two runs at the end of the second inning.

Caldwell would strike first in the second game of the doubleheader, as Stephen Young Jr. recorded an RBI single, and Zach Saunders came up next and slapped an RBI double to right center to give their team a 2-0 edge in the top of the opening inning.

The Cougars would push in another run in the second inning to widen their advantage to 3-0.

The Wildcats would finally get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when D’Angelo Ponce pushed in a run when grounded out to the shortstop to take the score to 3-1.

The Wildcats take a one-run lead after the third inning.

WilmU would grab the lead (4-3) in the bottom of the third inning when the team scored three runs on one hit and two errors.

Senior shortstop Matt Warrington would score first in the inning, as he would go home on a fielding error by the Cougars first baseman to slice the deficit to 3-2.

Tyler Pirrung came up to the plate next, as he smoked a RBI triple to right center to tie the score at three.

On the very next play, Pirrung would score on a passed ball to give his team a 4-3 advantage.

WilmU would lead by six runs at the end of the fourth inning.

The Wildcats would expand their edge in the bottom of the fourth inning, as the team scored five runs on four hits to take a 9-3 lead.

Three batters in the inning would push one runner home, as Matt Warrington got an RBI with reaching base on a fielder’s choice, Jack McDonald had an RBI single, and Freshman outfielder Brandon Grygo had an RBI on Sac Fly.

Sophomore first baseman Mason DeLuca pushed in two runs in the inning with a triple down the right-field line.

Wilmington University takes a nine-run lead at the end of the fifth inning.

The Wildcats would continue to widen their lead in the bottom of the fifth, as the team scored three runs on four hits to take a 12-3 advantage.

 Matt Warrington would get the scoring started in the inning as he slapped an RBI single through the left side to push his team’s edge to 10-3.

Jack McDonald would be the batter up, as he knocked a two-run double to right center to give his team a 12-3 lead.

WilmU leads by three runs at the end of the sixth inning.

The Cougars would claw back in this game in the top of the sixth inning when the team scored seven runs on two hits and one error to slice the deficit to 12-10.

The scoring highlight of the inning for Caldwell came when Liam Lombardi slugged a four-run homer to right field.

Wilmington would get one run back in the bottom of the inning when junior outfielder Shawn Edevane pushed in a run with a Sac Fly to give his team a 13-10 edge.

Wilmington University takes home a 13-11 win!

The Cougars would add one last run in the top of the seventh, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Wildcats still took home a 13-11 victory.

Pitching Recap:

Senior pitcher Anthony Giordano went four innings, gave up four hits, three runs, three earned runs, two walks, and struck out four batters in a victory.

The bullpen consisted of four relievers, who combined to give up four hits, seven runs, three runs, six walks, one home run, and struck out four batters.

Junior pitcher Alex Krick closed the game, as he went one inning, gave up two hits, one run, one earned run, two walks, struck out three batters, and earned the save.
