The Delaware State softball team picked up a split on Sunday in the doubleheader versus the Bowie State University Bulldogs. The Hornets dropped the first game 5-1 and won the second 10-1.
Let’s talk about their Game Two 10-1 win!
Game recap:
Delaware State leads by one run after the first inning.
Graduate student Utility player Felicity Munoz would be the star of the bottom of the first inning, as she would hit a single, follow that up by stealing second and third base, and ended by scoring on a batted ball to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead.
Hornets take a five-run lead after the second inning.
DSU would pour on the runs in the bottom of the second inning, as the team scored four runs on four hits to extend their advantage to 5-0.
Sophomore outfielder Sanaa Brown would get the scoring going in the second, as she reached home on a batted ball to put the score at 2-0.
After a triple on the next play, freshman outfielder Kaitlyn Horton would score on a batted ball to push the team’s lead to 3-0.
Two plays later, sophomore first baseman Emma Crowe would also score on a batted ball to extend Delaware State’s edge to 4-0.
Four plays later, Sophomore Utility player Kayla Lester would also reach home on a batted ball to expand the team’s advantage to 5-0.
DSU would score two more runs in the third inning.
After getting shut for two innings, Bowie State would finally get on the board in the third when Presleigh Braxton scored on a batted ball to slice the deficit to 5-1.
The Hornets would respond in the bottom of the third inning, with senior outfielder Sydney Glisson and Sophomore catcher Chandler Martin each scoring on batted balls to push their team’s lead to 7-1.
Delaware State takes home a 10-1 victory!
DSU would add three more runs in the fifth inning when Kaitlyn Horton, Emma Crowe, and freshman outfielder Leeani Hutcherson-Howard would all score on batted balls to seal a 10-1 victory.
Pitching Recap:
The Hornets had a lot of pop in the bat in this one, but senior starting pitcher McKenzie Yurcaba had a solid day in this matchup, as she went five innings, gave up four hits, one run, one earned run, two walks, and one strikeout.
