Julie McCarron hits last-second game-winning layup in Goldey-Beacom’s 55-53 victory over Chestnut Hill

Goldey-Beacom trails by one point after one-quarter of play.

The intensity of this matchup was high from the tip-off, as neither team would get a comfortable lead in the opening quarter. The biggest edge came at the 1:11 minute mark when Chestnut Hill led by four points.

In the last 49 seconds of the first quarter, the Lightning would cut the deficit to one point (10-9) by outscoring the Griffins 5-2.

Janiya Stevens didn’t score during that time but played a part in that run, as she had a defensive rebound and an assist.

GBC was down by one point at the end of the first half. 

The battle continued in the second quarter, where the biggest lead of the period came from Goldey-Beacom, who took a three-point advantage at the 8:52 minute mark (13-10), 6:56 mark (15-12) and 5:27 minute mark (17-14).

Starting at the 4:18 minute mark, Chestnut Hill would outscore GBC 8-4 to take a slim 22-21 advantage into halftime.

The Lightning leads by five points at the end of the third quarter. 

Goldey would strike fast in the early minutes of the second half, as the team dashed out on a 13-6 run to grab a 34-27 edge with 3:51 remaining in the third quarter.

Janiya Stevens and Julie McCarron were a hard duo to stop during this stretch, as they scored ten of the team’s 13 points.

GBC’s defense was strong during this time, as they had six defensive rebounds and one steal.

The Lightning would score two more points in the quarter to head to the fourth with a 36-31 lead.

Fast forward to the 5:22 minute mark in the final quarter, where GBC’s Janiya Stevens would hit a jump shot to give her team a 47-41 advantage.

Seconds later, the Griffins would respond by going on a 12-6 run, which would tie the game at 53 with 19 seconds left. Bridie McCann was on fire from the three-point line during that stretch, as drained three shots from there.

Then, with less than a second remaining in the fourth quarter, Julie McCarron would come up clutch by getting a layup to go in to give Goldey-Beacom a 55-53 victory over Chestnut Hill.
