Carlos Fernandez records a hat trick in Blue Hens 3-2 win over William & Mary

The University of Delaware men’s soccer team picked up their fourth win of the season on Saturday with a 3-2 victory over the College of William & Mary Tribe.

The standouts in the game for the Blue Hens were senior forward Carlos Fernandez, freshman defender Jan Schroeder, senior forward Sam Donnellan, senior defender  Liam Fuller, freshman midfielder Richard Monath,, and sophomore goalkeeper Eddie DeMarco.

Fernandez had five shots, three shots at the goal, and scored three goals in the win.

Schroeder had one shot and one assist in the game.

Donnellan had four shots, one shot at the goal, and one assist in the win.

Fuller had one assist in the game.

Monath had one assist in the win.

DeMarco allowed two goals in 90 minutes and had three saves in the game.

Blue Hens would be down 2-1 at the end of the first half.

In the first 20 minutes of this game, the defense was tight on both sides as neither side could get a shot at the goal, but that would change around the 22nd minute.

The Delaware offense would find a spark as Carlos Fernandez blasted a shot through the net to give his team a 1-0 lead. Fernadez’s score would be assisted by Sam Donnellan.

It would not take long for William & Mary to strike back, as almost a minute later, Lucas Caldas would find the back on the net to tie the game at one.

Then, close to seven minutes later, the Tribe would find the goal again as Evan Rabush jumped in the air and headed the ball into the net to give his team a 2-1 edge at the 29th-minute mark.

Delaware comes back in the second half to win 3-2!!

UD would be more aggressive in the second half as they outshot William & Mary 11-4, but three of their shots at the goal would be stopped in the first 26 minutes of the period.

The Hens would find the scoring magic in the 87th minute, as Carlos Fernandez would get his second goal of the night in way of a bicycle kick to tie the game at two. Fernandez’s score would be assisted by Liam Fuller.

The Blue Hens were not done yet, as a couple of minutes later, Carlos Fernandez pushed his third goal in of the game to help seal a 3-2 comeback victory for his team. Jan Schroeder and Richard Monath assisted Fernandez in the play.
