The University of Delaware men’s soccer team picked up their third win of the season on Tuesday with a 3-2 victory over the Mount St. Mary’s University Mountaineers.
The standouts in the game for the Blue Hens were senior forward Carlos Fernandez, senior forward Sam Donnellan, senior forward Justin Ruth, freshman midfielder Richard Monath, freshman midfielder Luke Chatten, sophomore forward Mikey Johnson, and sophomore goalkeeper Eddie DeMarco.
Fernandez had three shots, one shot at goal, and scored one goal in the win.
Donnellan had one shot, one shot at the goal, and scored one goal in the game.
Ruth had two assists in the win.
Monath had four shots, one shot at the goal, and one goal in the game.
Chatten had one assist in the victory.
DeMarco allowed two goals in 90 minutes and had two saves in the game.
The game would be tied at one after one half of play.
Delaware would be the first team to put a goal on the scoreboard in this one, as Sam Donnellan flicked a header past the Mount St. Mary’s goalkeeper from the cross by teammate Justin Ruth in the 17th minute to give his team a 1-0 lead.
It would not take long for the Mount to answer back, as 22 seconds later, Bobby Marsteller would get the ball through the lower left side of the net to tie the game at one.
Blue Hens score two goals in the second half to seal a 2-1 victory!
Fast forward 15 minutes into the second half is where the next scoring action would happen for UD, as Luke Chatten would pass the ball to the middle to Richard Monath, and then he would execute a give-and-go with Mikey Johnson, who found the back on the net to push the Hens edge to 2-1.
Almost 18 minutes later, Carlos Fernandez blasted the ball in for a score to give Delaware a 3-1 advantage. Justin Ruth would get his second assist of the day by setting up Fernadnez on the score.
Mount St. Mary’s would get a late goal on the scoreboard, but the Hens would hang on to take home a 3-2 victory.
